white picket fence

I ordered this dress a couple of weeks ago because I wanted a dress that would be good for layering. Fall in Florida is still primarily hot until around forever [ the past couple of year's have been so warm ], so it's going to be impossible to dress in sweaters and riding boots for a while. I like to find pieces that can work for both fall and the warm weather.

This swing dress can be worn now and later. I can wear it with flats and a blazer [ especially great for work ] or sweater and with tights or riding boots and a chunky sweater [ look at this one! ] later. The dark green is one of my favorite colors and I love pairing it with black and navy, but I think tan and blush would also be perfect.

[ sizing : wearing an xs fits tts ]

I feel like I'm wearing a few of my favorite things in this post. I found this navy J.Crew blazer in a consignment shop in near perfect condition and it fits so well. I wear it all the time and I wasn't expecting to love it so much. These mules are classic, neutral, and comfortable and make me feel put together, regardless of what I'm wearing. Add in a dress that has the best movement. All the makings for a good outfit. Fall is a good time to stock up on your key staples. I always end up finding the best basics that I wear throughout the year. Good jeans, leather shoes, soft tees for layering, and dresses that can be transformed with layers.

Also, how cute is this little neighborhood? Kinda reminds me of Wisteria Lane from Desperate Housewives!

 [ this one too! ]

Have a good weekend!

my clarisonic

I've written about skincare before when I wrote about my skincare routine, but I left out one crucial step to keeping my clear. My clarisonic. I've had mine for nearly 5 years now and I got it when I was out of ideas and desperate for clear skin. Now I fall in and out of a routine with it, but I always end up going back and I always love the results.

In the beginning, I needed it to clear my breakouts and I kept a strict schedule of using it every other day. Using it everyday was too harsh for my sensitive skin, so every other day (about 3-4 days a week) with a gentle cleanser ended up being my key to better skin.

While I still get the occasional spot, I mostly reach for my clarisonic when I want to deep clean my skin. Even though I thoroughly remove my makeup every night, the clarisonic makes my skin feel so clean and smooth. One of the biggest differences I noticed when I wasn't using it was how my skin felt. It didn't feel as smooth, almost as if my cleansers and masks were just cleaning the surface. So I started using my clarisonic again and I've noticed the biggest difference! Much smoother and softer.

I have the Mia 1 and either use the sensitive skin or acne brush heads.

I know it's a bit of an investment, but I highly recommend getting!

Another quick mention. Sheet masks. I've had the driest skin lately and it seems like it's just getting drier. I'm obsessive with moisturizer and SPF, so I feel like I may need to change my products ( I typically don't have dry skin, but #skinchange). However, twice a week, I've been doing hydrating and exfoliating sheet masks to try and put moisture back into my skin. It started with grabbing these masks at Target just to try for fun and I've continued to buy them! They've been really soothing and give my skin back some of the moisture its lacking!

hydrate . exfoliate . deep hydration [ not a sheet mask, but want to try ].

see you wednesday!

step it up

Even though the leaves aren't changing, these photos feel like fall to me. I saw this dress while out shopping and wanted the chambray version at first, but went with the berry so that I could wear it to work as well. It's my perfect dress. I love shirt dresses, they're so figure flattering and can be worn in so many different ways. This dress has a simple cut, is shift style and is neutral, but it also has chrome buttons and interesting sleeves which make it fun! I think adding a field jacket over this when it gets cooler out would be so cute and I can also wear it with tights for a dressier look.

This little olive bag is turning into one of my fave's for the weekend. It doesn't hold a ton, but it fits the necessities and it's different from my usual go to. I almost returned this because I couldn't decide if I liked it, but now I can't get enough!

Another item I can't get enough of, shoes! If I could have a closet full of amazing, fabulous shoes. I'd be forever happy. Call me Carrie Bradshaw who prefers Manolo's over diamonds. There's just something about new shoes. These mules are what my I wish I could afford the Gucci horse bit loafers but can't dreams are made of. They are the comfiest and great quality [ the leather is so soft! ], however, size up a half size.

I hope you're enjoying the workwear wednesday's! See you next week!

my hair story

If it's one aspect about me that has evolved over the years, it's my hair. I have naturally curly hair and my curls and I haven't always seen eye to eye. We've come along way and I eventually grew to love them, I used to wish I had straight hair because I thought it was prettier, simpler. But it's all about knowing how to style them. It was my best friend's mom and Taylor Swift who taught me that.

I know that my hair is straight now, but my curls have changed over the years, they've become loose and wavy and I can't get the curl to happen like it used to. I also prefer having shorter hair that I only need to add heat to two or three times a week. It's just easier right now. The longer it gets, the heavier it is and I just can't deal. I have the thickest hair and there's seriously enough for 10 people!

What sparked this idea to write this post was a little girl I overheard at the salon I go to. I got there early and was sitting in the waiting room when I heard my stylist trying to figure out how to turn a 9 year old girl's short boy cut into a more stylish pixie cut. Why did this poor girl have a boy cut? I don't know, there was a good reason, but I missed out on that part of the convo. But the reason for Chrissy (my stylist) trying to make it better was because the little girl was being made fun of at school. I instantly felt bad for this girl and I could also completely relate to her. I've never had a pixie cut. But I have been made fun of for my hair and I've also not known how to fix it.

I didn't get to meet that girl, but I hope she know's that bad hair days come and go. But it's hair and it can always change. I also hope she know's that this elementary school moment won't last and there's bigger and better things to look forward to.

My hair has evolved along with me. As much as I've hated certain moments, I had to learn how to love my curls, how to style them. Even though I'm choosing not to wear my hair like that now, I can easily go back. And I've had countless frizzy, bad hair days, made the wrong hair cut choice because I wanted to look like my favorite celebrity, and honestly humidity cannot be helped but it's lethal. I also had black hair for a moment thanks to a bad dye job. [ do NOT let your bff dye your hair when your 17 and have no idea what you're doing! ] I used to dread my hair, now I just go with it. I'm still not an expert with my hair, I'm still figuring it out, but just like style evolves, hair does, too. I also had to accept the hair that I have and stop wishing that I had someone else's.

There were moments in the airport where my hair was patted down. #omg And in the doctor's office when two nurse's thought my hair was a wig. #eyeroll And there were moments where I was well into my twenties and I thought the comments revolving around my hair were done. But they happened, too.

But the chances of going bald are slim to none. ;)

I've tried so many products, but here are my current favorites!

I only wash my hair twice a week, so this dry shampoo revives my third day hair! And it's tinted!

Since I do use heat on my hair, can it dry it out, but it needs a protectant. This goes on wet and keeps my hair moisturized and protected from heat!

This stuff is amazing! I put it on before I blow dry and omg helps to smooth out my hair and keep it really soft! It also adds weight, which is good for someone with frizzy and wavy hair.

Even if I use conditioner in the shower (sometimes I skip because less scalp buildup, TMI I know) I still use this after because it's nourishing and it smells so good!

Instead of using my standard paddle brush, I switched to a wide tooth comb and I've noticed less breakage in my hair.

I've had this one for years and it's been great! I've also dropped it and it still works well.

I got this nume for $15 on a Black Friday whim and it's been the most amazing purchase! It straightens quickly and heats up so well! Best $15 spent.

see you on wednesday with a new workwear post!

I normally love living in Florida, the sunshine, Gulf coast, lifestyle, and I've always felt lucky to live here since moving when I was a child. But hurricanes are the one exception. I feel like everyone feels like this, but these monstrous storms are terrifying to me.

Since we're not in south Florida and we're not near the water, we're not evacuating, but I'm wishing / hoping / praying that everything turns out ok for us and everyone.

I've stocked up on the essentials (my favorite dark chocolate covered pretzels and cookies) as well as a magazine and comfy pj's.

[ what I've been loving ]
have them in 'livin it up + navy - they are the comfiest and so silky.

got this in dusty pink and it's so pretty and dainty. I can't wait to wear this with oversized sweaters!

favorite. candle. ever. It actually smells like hot chocolate and it makes me so happy that they brought it back this season!

[ what I've been wanting ]
prepping for fall.

sassy sweatshirts
I love cute loungewear, I mean, see above.

Even though I'm talking about clothes and my favorite things, I hope everyone stays safe and prepared for Irma.

I know that I normally have a workwear look for Wednesday, but I decided to share another denim outfit. I've been searching for well fitting denim, as I mentioned in the last post, and I've found my new favorite pair!

These are from Zara. Full disclosure, Zara sizing is a bit different from standard sizing. It took me a trying on a few sizes to figure out how their sizing works. However, once you do. So good. I really wanted a not so standard pair this time. I found this pair with a frayed hem, a bit of distressing, and two-tone wash and while they're a bit out of my norm, I loved them.

[ sizing - normal 25/26, 0/2 | zara 34 / 27/ 4 ]

I'm also loving this top from Free People. It's oversized in the best way and I love the color! I have been adding tops like this to my wardrobe. The comfy, but acceptable to leave the house kind. This one is perfect.

[ size xs ]

Even though the jeans are a bit different for me, I feel most like myself in this outfit. Well fitting denim. Comfy, easy top. Statement shoe. I bought these shoes in the Nordstrom sale and they are the best. They're super fun and they don't slide off. Also they can be dressed up (good for work) or super dressed down. I wore them with cut-off's and a tee and it made the outfit something more for the weekend.

Side note: a mammoth hurricane is coming our way, so I'm not sure about next week's posts, the weekend is looking a bit dark and stormy. If you're in an area where Irma might go, stay safe.

back to basics

I feel like these photos look like fall with the olive bag, red wall, and pants. But I haven't given up summer. I've just been focusing on finding really good jeans lately because I've been in desperate need of well fitting denim and I finally found some!

I can't remember the last time I bought jeans. I know which jeans I bought, but I don't remember when and while I still wear those jeans, I've never loved them. They're well made and I would recommend them because they hold up well and still look like new. However, they just don't fit me well. Finding denim that's made for you as an individual is hard.

I prefer mine to not have a ton of stretch, the more they slide down the less comfortable they become for me. The higher the cotton percentage with just a small amount of elastane allows for just a hint of stretch. Or 100% cotton where there isn't much stretch at all. Perfect.

Here's  an article about how denim's constructed if you want more information! ]

I found these jeans at Nordstrom Rack a couple of weekends ago and I've been loving them! They are so comfortable, have a tiny bit of stretch, but don't fall down! They're 98% cotton and 2% elastane. They're ankle length with a simple raw hem. I wanted something interesting, yet subtle.

The tee I'm wearing is marked down for $5.99 and I'm obessed with it. It's a great basic with a little extra, I love having tops like this in my closet! They're the easiest to accessorize with your favorite shoes or a fun bag. Or both, like I did here.

see you wednesday!
